After owning and selling as many speakers as I have, I can honestly say that Sonus faber makes many of my favourite speakers. Designed and made in Italy by passionate enthusiasts and craftsmen, the design team uses the finest and most sophisticated computer modelling system to simulate the best possible drivers and enclosure designs. Then prototypes are made, listened to and measured until the team is satisfied.
It's obvious that Sonus faber makes many of the most beautiful and luxurious speakers. However, many audiophiles have no idea how sophisticated the company's design and engineering team is. For example, the lute shape of the enclosure is not only beautiful, it is also structurally very rigid, unlike a traditional rectangular box. The lute enclosure is also far more difficult to make, with its compound curves, 8 layers of curved wood, stainless steel inserts and flawless finishing.
Another example of the innovative and sophistication is the reflex port. Virtually all speaker companies use a hole or a tube. Some will dimple the port to reduce the chuffing of the air as it excapes. Sonus faber incorporates a solid piece of extruded aluminum that runs the entire height of the back. This piece acts as an external brace, an exoskeleton, and simultaneously the ribs of the brace has ridges that break up the turbulence of air flow.
